What to expect on a parent tour:San Rafael High School offers parent tours once a month, beginning in October and ending in April. Tours begin at 8:30am and last approximately one to one-and-a-half hours. During the parent tour, parent representatives from WeAreSR! and SLT give an overview of the school from their prospective. Topics can include curriculum, school safety and communication, extra-curricular activities and freshman integration into a larger educational facility. Several students speak about their experiences and involvement at San Rafael High. Principal Judith B. Colton addresses expectations regarding curriculum, honors/AP courses, school site safety, testing and a host of other topics. Questions are encouraged, and Principal Colton responds to them. There is a tour of the campus as well as the opportunity to view several of the programs that are unique to San Rafael High School, such as the broadcast academy. What to expect on a student shadow day:Incoming students have the opportunity to shadow (known as following) a student ambassador around for a day. Incoming students shadow students who are currently one grade above the grade the shadowing student is in so that the student has the opportunity to experience classes that s/he would attend at San Rafael High in the following academic year. (For example: 8th grade students shadow freshman; a freshman considering San Rafael High would shadow a sophomore student.) The shadowing student attends all classes with the current San Rafael High School, and if the parent gives permission, the shadow has the opportunity to leave campus at lunch with the current SRHS student. We strive to match shadowing students with current students students who have similar interests and will take classes similar to their student ambassadors in the following academic year. If a shadowing student has a friend they would like to shadow, requests can be made, but it is not guaranteed that it will be granted. Shadows are requested to bring reading material to school on the day they shadow in case a test is scheduled in the ambassador student's class. Shadows are requested to meet in front of the Administration Building at 7:50am for pairing up with their student ambassadors. We encourage you to schedule a tour early in the year as the student shadow/tours do fill up. To schedule a tour, or for more information on the shadow day, please contact the school at 485.2332. 8th Grade Parent/Student Evenings:The first 8th Grade Parent and Student Night is November 10, 2009 at 7:00pm and will be held in the Library. During this time Administrators meet with parents and students in the San Rafael High School library to provide an overview of the programs, policies, and activities available at San Rafael High School. Spanish translation will be available. The second 8th grade parent night is February 4, 2010 at 7:00pm and will be held in the Library and in the theater. During this time San Rafael High School counselors will meet with 8th grade parents to discuss the school and courses available to freshmen for their programming appointments in February and March. This will not be the same information covered at the first 8th grade parents night in November. Spanish translation will be available. San Rafael High School counselors will go to Davidson and Venetia Valley to meet with all 8th grade students individually to review their course selections for 9th grade. Parents will receive their student’s appointment in advance and are invited to attend with their student. If parents do not attend, it is important to read and sign your child’s course form prior to his/her appointment. Return to or visit the San Rafael High School website.
